John Robert "Joe" Cocker came to prominence in the late 1960s and is best known for his gritty voice, idiosyncratic arm movements while performing, and soulful cover versions of popular songs, particularly those of The Beatles . He had several hit songs and received numerous awards over his 50 plus year career, including a 1983 Grammy for the song 'Up Where We Belong'. Cocker, a native of Sheffield, England, was born in 1944 and formed his first band called the Cavaliers way back in 1960 at the age of 16.
