Josie And The Pussycats

From: Los Angeles, CA, USA

Best known as the 1970 Hanna-Barbera popular Saturday morning cartoon, most people don't realize that there was a very real and quite talented all female vocal group that performed all of the show's songs and issued a self-titled LP on Capitol Records late that year. The trio consisted of Cathy Dougher (lead vocals) as Josie, Patrice Holloway (vocals) as Valerie and last but not least, Cherie Moor (vocals) as Melody. Dougher aka Cathy Douglas (real name Kathleen Dougherty) was born in Montgomery, Alabama and brought a background of singing light opera, as well as previously being an actress. Holloway was a very talented multi-instrumentalist musician and songwriter originally from Los Angeles. From 1963 through the early 70s, she issued several solo 45s and also co-wrote the song 'You Make So Very Happy', which had already become a huge hit for Blood, Sweat & Tears about a year earlier. Moor (real name Cheryl Jean Stoppelmoor) was born in Huron, South Dakota and would later end up changing her name to Cheryl Ladd and finding fame on the hit television show Charlie's Angles, followed by several leading movie roles.

Most of the aforementioned album's tracks are of fairly pedestrian pop and were mainly written by Danny Janssen with a few co-written by him and Bobby Hart of Boyce & Hart fame. The record does contain a few pop-psych gems however, including the upbeat 'Roadrunner' and a haunting cover of Bread's 'It Don't Matter To Me', both featured here on TWOS. To further promote the cartoon, Hanna-Barbera and Capitol Reocrds partnered with Kellogg's where on their cereal boxes, you could send away for one of four 45s that were not released in stores. Another track highlight that can only be found on the A-side of "Record 2" of this collection is an over two minute, alternate version of the Josie And The Pussycats cartoon theme song titled 'Josie' that simply cannot be ignored either!
